Silek Minangkabau or Minangkabau silat is a martial art that has grown and developed in the Minangkabau region since time immemorial. Silek for Minang children is an identity, which is inherent in their daily lives, especially for their men. But it is not taboo for women, because many Minang women master the martial art.

In the past, a child who was going to wander, first studied silek until it was mature. It was intended that they could defend themselves from the attacks of bandits, or protect their relatives from wrath.
