The origin of the name Nagari Koto Ranah originated from Transmigration in 1980 with its initial name Telaga Biru Village included in the Government Area of Koto Baru Representative District, Sawanlunto / Sijunjung Regency and in 1996 became the Sei Rumbai District Government Area, Sawahlunto Regency / Sijunjung.
In 1997 Telaga Biru Village changed to Nagari Koto Tinggi, and changed again to Nagari Koto Ranah in 2003 by Tuanku Kingdom until now. Administratively, Nagari Koto Ranah is included in the Koto Besar District of Dharmasraya Regency which has an area of 13.5 km². The height from sea level is between 100-500 m with average temperatures ranging from 25-33 degrees Celsius.
